The Sea Life forum was created in 2003 by Nick Cumbo (explora)
Inspiration
The inspiration for Sea Life came from my participation in a small email-based dream group during 2002. As well as sharing dreams with one another, we actively experimented with dream tasks such as meeting together at a round table or visiting the lost city of Atlantis. This was alot of fun. Being a part of the group intensified the quality of my dreams, and opened a space for discussion that wasn't available in terms of my face-to-face interactions with friends.
Formation of Dream Teams
By December 2002 the original group had dissolved, yet the excitement remained. I started a Dream Teams forum online and sent out an invitation to members of the LD4all forum to participate. Three months later, the Dream Teams forum had grown significantly and was home to three different dream teams, each with about 8 members.
Creation of Sea Life
After reading an article called Dreaming Our Way to the Heart of the World by Robert Moss, I launched a forum project called Dreaming Our Way to 2012 in which we would attempt to dream our way into the future.
Mirroring a developing philosophy, I had earlier renamed the forum Earth Dreamers. For my part in the project, I hoped to visit the year 2012 in a lucid dream and return with a more original name for the forum that continued to emphasise the goal of "dreaming with and for the Earth itself". I was very surprised with the results:
Sea Life 2012 (March 22, 2003)
I become lucid near my home - and falling from the heights of the hill, begin to traverse a long spiral journey down into the earth. With each twist I sense myself moving further into the future. Emerging into my living room, I find myself in front of a flashy new iMac computer.
I am surprised to discover a new piece of software called "Adobe Sea Life" that seems central to it's operation. When launched, it reveals an animation of sea life in a tank, mutating and evolving. I learn that I am the central architect behind it's development, though I also find a business card with the names and numbers of 10-12 other people who seem to be involved in this project.
It was from this dream that the name "Sea Life" emerged - a name that seems full of metaphor and mystery. It is said that human life evolved from the ocean's depths. In dreaming together at Sea Life it is a similarly ancient and unknown landscape that we are seeking to explore.
