A group of friends is about to
travel between realities. They are using a machine which looks a lot
like a modern American glass phone booth (Dr. Who and TARDIS reference,
anyone?). We call it a "Time Machine", though it actually doesn't travel
in time - it travels between different, parallel realities. Three of
them were in the machine and were going on a mission. A friend and I
were left behind, but we wanted to go along so bad we tried running for
the machine as they started it up. We were outside it, but we were
caught in the "blast radius" of the travel effect, and after a flash of
light we were somewhere else. Or rather, in the exact same place.
The warehouse we were in was now derelict. It was broken, with rust all
over the walls, dirt all over the floor and a thick mix of dirt and...
something else, in the air. Something was obviously wrong. The trip
somehow teleported me and the other late traveler into the machine. The
others scowled at us - apparently, no one was supposed to move when the
machine was working. Our running sent it haywire, taking us somewhere
else entirely. We could be in serious danger. We walked out of the
machine slowly, and an eerie music started playing. My friends started
to panic "What is that?", someone asks. Uh-oh. "It's RESIDENT EVIL!", I
shout, starting to panic as well. I seemed to be sure the music belonged
to the horror/zombie franchise Resident Evil.
We all ran into the booth again and tried to make it teleport away, when
we spotted something moving in the other room. To our increasing
horror, I recognized it as a zombie from the Left4Dead series: The
Witch. She was crying and wailing and slumping towards our door. One
more step and we'd be in plain sight. The machine whirred as it started
up, but the Witch was fast, if she saw us... And then she did. She
turned, growling, and charged towards us, claws up. She was closing in,
about to rip us apart when we saw another flash. The machine made the
trip just in time. Phew.
This time it took us to the right place: we arrived in what seemed to be
a department store. The place was luxurious, well lit and, for some
reason, considerably empty. Still, it was the right place: we were here
with Robin (from the How I Met Your Mother TV series), where she would
meet the alternate-world version of Barney (also from HIMYM). It turns
out that in her original timeline, Barney had married someone else.
Heartbroken, she figured a way to be with him was to find one of his
alternate versions. Alternate Barney was supposed to be here, at this
time and place, and much to her joy we soon ran into him. Alternate
Barney wore glasses, had a beard and was a doctor. He was much more
serious and responsible. When they laid eyes on one another, it was
clear they had fallen in love.
